Unit Converter

Two standards are in use at once. Storage vendors and networking use the SI meaning, where kilo is 1,000, so a drive sold as 1 TB holds a round trillion bytes. Operating systems mostly report binary units, where a kibibyte is 1,024 bytes and a tebibyte is 1,024 to the fourth, and that same drive shows up as roughly 931 GB in Windows, which is where the accusation of missing space comes from. Both families are listed here, KB beside KiB and TB beside TiB, so you can convert between them and see the gap for yourself.

Because the scales have different zero points, not only different step sizes. Every other category converts by multiplying through a base unit, but 0 °C is 32 °F, so Celsius and Fahrenheit need a formula with an offset in it. That also splits two questions people run together: ten degrees Celsius is fifty degrees Fahrenheit, while a ten-degree Celsius rise is an eighteen-degree Fahrenheit rise. The formula printed under the result says which one you are looking at.

Enough to kill float noise without truncating small values: results above 1,000 are held to four decimal places, results above 1 to six, and anything smaller to ten.
