What happens if a save fails?

You get told, on the status line, rather than losing the keystrokes quietly, the message asks you to download the note, because a failed write means storage is either full or blocked. If the browser blocks localStorage outright, a warning sits there from the moment the page loads saying notes will not survive a reload.

Do two open tabs stay in step?

Yes. A save in one tab fires the storage event, and the other tab picks up the new notes.

How is the reading time worked out?

Word count divided by 200 words a minute, rounded to at least one minute for any text at all.
