FAQ

A run of non-whitespace that still contains a letter or a digit once the surrounding punctuation is stripped off, so a lone em dash is not a word, and state-of-the-art is one. That definition leans entirely on spaces, which means it does not work for Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Thai: a whole paragraph with no spaces in it registers as a single word. Use the character count for those, and ignore the reading-time estimate, which is derived from the word count and will be nonsense.
