Does it understand named colours like rebeccapurple?

No. HEX, RGB, HSL and HSV only, a colour name is not parsed and the field turns red.

What do the AA and AAA badges mean?

They are the WCAG 2.1 thresholds: 4.5:1 for body text at AA, 3:1 for large text at AA, 7:1 for body text at AAA and 4.5:1 for large text at AAA, where large means 18pt or 14pt bold. The ratio comes from relative luminance rather than apparent brightness, which is why a vivid yellow fails against white.

How is the tint and shade ramp calculated?

Each step is a straight linear mix of your colour toward white or black in sRGB, 85, 70, 55, 40 and 20 percent toward white, then the same five toward black. It is not perceptually spaced, so the middle shades can read darker than the percentages suggest. Useful as a starting palette, not a replacement for tuning by eye.

FAQ

HSL and HSV are shown rounded to whole numbers, while 8-bit RGB has 16.7 million discrete points, so most colours have no exact whole-number HSL. Editing the rounded value snaps the colour to the nearest representable RGB triple, which can move the HEX by one step per channel. Type into the HEX or RGB field when the value has to be exact.
